Since 1999, the cherry industry in South Africa is enjoying significant growth in terms of new plantings of varieties highly sought after in the international markets, on new root stocks which offer many advantages to the growers, according the latest high-density, high-yield technology employed the world over. The South African Cherry Association was formed in 2001 in order to provide some structure to the industry and to focus on issues that the growers are faced with. The Executive Committee of the Association consists of 6 members representing the main stone fruit producing regions in the RSA and administers The Association. SACGA falls under the structure of the Deciduous Fruit Producers’ Trust (DFPT), the umbrella industry service organisation of which SASPA nominates trustees. SACGA also liaises closely with DFPT Research, the body that directs and guides the industry’s research needs and expenditure. |
